Datacentre efficiency is at the forefront of most green IT initiatives and many organisations are embarking on programmes to green the data centre. As with most sustainable initiatives, it is extremely important to baseline where you are before making changes so that you can measure the benefit and business savings.

Getting more out of PUE in the datacentre
Friday, August 7th, 2009Who said going green was easy?
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009…going green requires systemic change in a business and is not as easy as switching the lights off or migrating to energy efficient technology. Without a holistic strategic business focus around sustainability initiatives, organisations are doomed to failure and maximum business benefits and minimizing environmental impacts will not be realised.
Eskom’s rate hike is too low!
Wednesday, June 10th, 2009My hypothesis is simple, raise rates further for the biggest users that can adapt the most. At the same time subsidise the poor, perhaps trading off the corporate increase with a reduction for the poor. Finally, the raise will provide a stimulus for energy efficiency and clean energy investment which will lower barriers to entry and will take many many people out of energy poverty. We adapt or we die.
Energy efficient hardware | Homework first, then replace!
Monday, March 23rd, 2009It staggers us when we speak to customers about energy savings techniques and we hear that they have gone through PC and monitor replacement programmes, justifying them in the main on the back of energy savings. Yes, replacing your CRT’s with LCD’s will save energy and putting in more efficient processors will do the same. But what about the environmental costs, the hidden costs and most importantly, the business case? Being a bit more innovative may actually achieve better results!
Remote working can help you go green and save costs
Thursday, March 19th, 2009The office is set for dramatic paradigm shifts in the next 3 to 5 years as spiraling oil and energy costs force business to relook at how they deploy their workforce in a virtual world. Although the virtual office and hot-desking have been around for some time, particularly in Europe and the United States, these shifts in business delivery will take deeper root in South Africa, as technologies advance and become more accessible.
Power Conservation Programme : Technology can help!
Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009Depending on your industry segment, you will be forced to cut emissions by between 5% and 20%, 5% for agriculture and 20% for corporates. Industry faces a 10% cut and government institutions 15%. The baseline has been calculated from October 2006 to September 2007 (pre load-shedding) and savings need to be achieved against this target.
